Amplifying the lived experience of people affected by cancer

WHO Global Survey on the Lived Experience Affected by Cancer: Phase 2 Study Updated

On July 30, 2025, WHO successfully closed Phase 2 of its global survey on the lived experience of people affected by cancer. The response from around the world has been remarkable.

More than 4,000 people from 125 countries participated in the survey, sharing their experiences in 25 different languages. These voices represent people living with cancer, survivors, family members, caregivers, and those who have lost a loved one to cancer. This reflects the true global impact of cancer on individuals and communities.

Why this survey matters

1 in 5 people are diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Nearly every family around the world is affected by cancer, either directly or as caregivers of someone who has had cancer. A cancer diagnosis can have a profound effect on the health and well-being of all those involved.

“For too long, the focus in cancer control has been on clinical care and not on the broader needs of people affected by cancer,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization. “Global cancer policies must be shaped by more than data and scientific research they must also reflect the voices and lived experiences of people impacted by the disease.”

WHO's "Global survey on the lived experience of people affected by cancer" was designed in collaboration with those affected by cancer and is intended to strengthen their voices.

The survey results contribute to better understanding of the emotional, practical, social, and financial needs of those affected by cancer, and ensure their perspectives directly inform policy and programme development.

What happens next

Reflecting WHO’s long-term commitment to placing people affected by cancer at the centre of policy and programme design, the survey findings will now be carefully analysed and translated into action to strengthen people-centred cancer care worldwide:

  • Inform the development of programmes and services to improve the well-being of people diagnosed with cancer
  • Strengthen support for families and caregivers
  • Ensure that the voices of people affected by cancer shape cancer care and policy at global, regional, and national levels

WHO sincerely thanks everyone who shared their experience and contributed to this global effort.

Thank you for ensuring that people affected by cancer are heard and placed at the centre of action!!
