Bharatpur, Bagmati Province — The Nursing and Social Security Division under the Ministry of Health and Food Safety (MoHFS), and WHO Country Office for Nepal, with support from The Pandemic Fund, conducted a three-day training on Healthcare-Associated Infection (HAI) surveillance at Bharatpur Hospital from 13-15 June 2026. The training brought together 18 nurses and microbiologists to strengthen their knowledge and skills in HAI case identification, digital data management, reporting, infection trends analysis, outbreak identification and surveillance implementation. The programme marked the formal launch of HAI surveillance at Bharatpur Hospital, representing an important milestone in the rollout of Nepal’s National HAI Surveillance Programme and reinforcing infection prevention and control (IPC) efforts. Using standardized case definitions adapted from WHO and the National Standard Operating Procedures on HAI Surveillance endorsed by the MoHFS, participants developed practical competencies to implement systematic HAI surveillance for evidence-based IPC practice. Aligned with the WHO Global Strategy on IPC, the International Health Regulations 2005 (IHR 2005), antimicrobial resistance (AMR) priorities and Joint External Evaluation (JEE) recommendations, this initiative contributes to safer healthcare, improved patient outcomes and a more resilient health system. WHO will continue to support the nationwide scale-up of HAI surveillance to strengthen evidence-based IPC programmes.
