Traditional Medicine at the Nexus of Climate, Biodiversity, and Land Restoration (Rio Conventions)

20 May 2026 09:00 – 10:00 CET
Health Diplomacy House, Rue Rothschild 28, Geneva, Switzerland & Online

This side event aims to elevate the role of Traditional medicine and Indigenous knowledge at the intersection of the Rio Conventions, United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and Convention on Biological Diversity by positioning it as a critical link between health, ecosystem resilience, and sustainable development.

However, global health discussions often isolate health from its ecological foundations. In reality, the effectiveness, availability, and continuity of traditional medicine depend directly on the health of ecosystems.

Today, the triple planetary crisis climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation is directly threatening:

  • The survival of medicinal species
  • The potency and efficacy of treatments
  • The transmission of Indigenous knowledge systems

Great recognition and support for TM as a bridge between Rio conventions is essential for effective implementation.
