WHO Director-General's opening remarks at the World Health Assembly Public Health Prizes Awards Ceremony – 20 May 2026

20 May 2026

Mr President,

The 2026 public health prizes and awards celebrate outstanding people and organizations who have made a significant contribution to global health, and whose work has extended far beyond the call of normal duty.

It is an honour to recognise these champions of health from around the world:

From Mali, the country’s first community health association, which brought health services closer to local communities, creating a model that has been replicated across Mali and Africa.

From Thailand, an inspiring doctor who has supported equitable care for vulnerable, displaced and cross-border populations.

From France, a global leader in healthy ageing who has helped to transform care for older people.

From Singapore, a public health service provider leading an innovative whole-of-government approach to healthy ageing.

From Bangladesh, a researcher with a lifelong commitment to reducing the burden of diseases affecting rural, poor and marginalized populations.

And from Egypt, a public health leader with significant achievements in disease control, epidemic preparedness, immunization and health system modernization.

I congratulate each of the laureates for their inspirational contributions to health and well-being.

At a time when the world faces many challenges, each of you is an inspiration and a reminder of the progress that can be made to improve health and well-being for all.

I also thank the foundations and institutions who support these awards.

In particular, I thank the Republic of Korea, which has established an award on behalf of the late Dr Lee Jong-wook, former Director-General of WHO, on the 20th anniversary of his passing. We are honoured to be joined today by Dr Lee’s widow, Mrs Reiko Kaburaki Lee.

I would also like to recognize Mr Yohei Sasakawa, who is celebrating 25 years as WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Leprosy Elimination.

I salute you all, I commend you, and I ask you to continue your important work to bring us all together as we work towards a healthier, safer and fairer world.

I thank you.
