Group A streptococcus (GAS)
Introduction
The development of Group S Streptococcus (GAS) vaccines is a priority for WHO’s Product & Delivery Research Unit, given its considerable under-appreciated burden of acute and chronic disease globally, a large number of antibiotics used to treat GAS infections, and its role in rheumatic heart disease (RHD). RHD affects around 30 million people each year, and a 2018 World Health Assembly resolution calls for better control and prevention, including prioritising the development of interventions that will prevent underlying infections. If available, a GAS vaccine could address a range of clinical manifestations and associated antibiotic use.
Preferred Product Characteristics
WHO preferred Product Characteristics for GAS vaccines have been developed, that propose preferences for key vaccine parameters that are important when considering the public health need and the pathway to policy decision and use. WHO’s PDR unit continues to facilitate GAS vaccine development through its membership on SAVAC, the Strep A Vaccine Global Consortium.
