The World Health Organization (WHO) underscores the critical importance of comprehensive medical and public health preparedness for mass gatherings, where large numbers of people come together and health risks can rapidly escalate if not properly managed.
On this occasion, Dr Ailan Li, WHO Representative to Thailand, participated in an on-site visit regarding medical preparedness for the Closing Ceremony of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Bangkok. The visit focused on ensuring readiness across key areas, including emergency medical services, disease surveillance, food safety, environmental health, and strong multisectoral coordination among relevant authorities.

Thailand’s Department of Medical Services, Ministry of Public Health, plays a central role in managing medical preparedness for major events. The country has a strong and internationally recognized track record in delivering safe and effective health services for large-scale events, including international sporting competitions, royal ceremonies, religious events, and other major public gatherings.
WHO recognizes that Thailand’s extensive experience reflects the strength and readiness of its health system and positions the country as a potential regional and global learning hub for mass gathering preparedness. Lessons learned from Thailand’s practical experience can be adapted by other countries to support safe, resilient, inclusive, and well-coordinated mass gathering events.
WHO Thailand remains committed to working closely with national authorities and partners to strengthen preparedness, share evidence-based guidance, and promote collaboration to ensure that mass gatherings protect lives and leave no one behind.
